Linux and Windows are just tools, both have their strengths and
weaknesses, and I ultimately discovered that there was no reason not to
have both.

I have no particular allegiance to either OS, but lets face it, Windows
has a lot of strength in its front-end. Although I could conceivably
replace many of my applications with Linux equivalents, there would be
compromises. I play games, use Photoshop extensively, need to run MS
apps for work, etc. There's also the fact that MS has great driver
support for hardware.

On the other hand, Linux has a lot of strength in its back-end. For
running web services and applications, it's hard to beat. It is also a
very stable system that can be kept running almost indefinitely, even on
a modest system. I also find Linux to be "fun" in a certain geeky sort
of a way.

So use both--just don't dual boot (yuck!). I set up my main powerhouse
system with Windows, and then setup a modest stripped-down system with
Linux (currently SUSE 10) which runs 24/7 as my backend. There is no
keyboard, mouse, or monitor attached to the Linux box. However, by
using available free remote management software (FreeNX and Webmin),
the systems are so tightly integrated that Linux and Windows seem like
a single system.

The Linux box acts as a NAS (using Samba--so no filesystem
compatibility issues), Slimserver, Photo gallery (Coppermine), web
server (Apache), FTP server, Print server, Blog server (Serendipity),
etc., while also providing the ability to run some certain desktop apps
which are not available (or as good) on Windows.

Windows is used for everything else.

I guess my point is that anytime I hear of someone "switching" from
Windows to Linux, I wonder whether that's really the best choice. It's
like saying you're switching from eating meat to eating vegetables. If
it's a religious decision that's fine; but personally I prefer to eat
both.
