I might add that apparently this problem can be reproduced. My second Squeezebox, which was working fine, is now exhibiting the same symptoms, after going through a similar cycle... I thought that maybe going to 6.5.0 would make the bad box work, but it didn't, and when I went back to 6.3.1 the good box started to exhibit the same problem.
So, Slim Devices, what now?
