I agree with the advice that if your friends know Windows, let them use windows. I hadn't used Linux/Unix before getting into Slimserver, but learned enough so that I could run Linux on an old box with almost 0 downtiime. My Windows box crashes and/or gets bogged down and/or has to be rebooted for Windows update. I chose FreeBSD and am often up for several months at a time without a reboot. That is awesome and it was worth the time to learn it.
But if their real interest is just trying Slimserver?
