Thank you very much for the flame-free help.  I'm decent at using my
FreeBSD installation but once in a while something like this comes up
and I'm wholly clueless (including the problem report procedure).  As
you suspected, even in the post-patched file the path to the perl
binary was wrong; I changed that line and was able to complete the
install.  I'll file a problem report as appropriate!  Thanks again,
this was tremendously helpful.
