I installed Fedora Core 6 on a partition on my machine a while back.  My
gut impression was that FC6 is very concerned about access and security
(not an issue for me in a secure, single-user system).  Check to see if
there are any access/security/reliability features related to the file
system that might be causing poor performance.  The FC6 Release Notes
would be a good place to start.  Checking the Fedora forums as you
suggested is also a good idea.

The standard Fedora file systems types, ext2 and ext3, usually perform
fairly well.
