It might be worth trying the version of mysqld that's distributed with
slimserver; this will be faster than re-emerging the Gentoo version.

To do this:

cd /opt/slimserver/Bin
rm mysqld
ln -s /opt/slimserver/Bin/i386-linux/mysqld mysqld

Then start slimserver.
