Try Kubuntu or Ubuntu. Both can run from a disc without buggering up the rest of the system. You loose everything when turning off so install the real thing.
Ubuntu has a better front of house than debian if you like that sort of thing. I haven't the wit or imagination to run from the console all the time. If you are using edgy then make sure you check out all the instructions 'cos there can be slight difficulties with an "automatic" install.
