Once again, thanks for the help Michael...

I wiped all slimserver files/folders and reinstalled.

Everything in /usr/local/slimserver and usr/local/slimserver/MYSQL is
user/group=slimserver and permissions=755

/etc/slimserver.conf is user/group=slimserver and permissions=644

The only thing I did as root was edit the first line of slimserver.pl
file to redirect perl per your instructions.

When I run "/etc/rc.d/init.d/slimserver start" from webmin as user
slimserver I get "Starting SlimServer: standard in must be a tty"

So I telneted in, changed USER=slimserver and ran:

bash-2.05a$ echo $USER
slimserver
bash-2.05a$ cd /usr/local/slimserver
bash-2.05a$ /usr/local/bin/perl5.8.6 slimserver.pl

Is there an list of files with their proper permissions available for
an idiot like me to check against file by file to make sure everything
is set right??
