Etch has just become the new Debian stable release, so in order to break a perfectly working system I have decided to upgrade ;-) (Actually it was a fresh install on a new disk, just in case...)
I found that if I simply added the slimdevices repo at the top of /etc/apt/sources.list I got a 'Size mismatch' error from apt-get with the package 'libpath-class-perl', which prevented installation of slimserver. I got round the problem by temporarily removing the slimdevices repo from /etc/apt/sources.list and installing the slimserver from the official Debian repo, then adding the slimserver repo back again in order to upgrade to the lastest version of slimserver (Debian only officially carries an ancient version of slimserver). I'm not saying that doing this won't break something horribly, but wondered if anyone could shed light on what the basis of the problem is. Does the slimserver .deb need repackaging to work properly with etch? Cheers!
