Hei... Even I found the installation instructions for SlimServer quite not noob'ish for me.
But, I will try to break it down even more for you, since we are all here to help: 1. Open a Terminal (Application > Accessories > Terminal) - Now what looks like an old DOS window should be open 2. Type "sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list". You will be prompted to enter your password. After you have entered it a text editor will open in a new windows. 3. In the text editor, scroll down to the end of the file and then add the sentence "deb http://debian.slimdevices.com stable main". Now click on "Save" and then exit the text editor. 4. Go back to the Terminal (the DOS window) and type "sudo apt-get update", you will again be prompted for your password. Enter and you will see a lot of text flashing by, this is normal. 5. Once it is done, type "sudo apt-get install slimserver", and again you will be prompted for your password. Enter it and after a short moment, you will be usually asked two questions. The first you will be asked, is that the integrity/consistency (or something like that), just answer yes to this (press Y). The next sometimes you might be asked, is whether you want to download, answer yes to this also (press Y). SlimServer will now start installing itself and once completed, will say something like SlimServer has been installed. 6. Now you have SlimServer installed. You can try to access by opening Firefox and type "localhost:9000" 7. In SlimServer go to "Settings" and enter the path where you store your music and playlists. In my case this is a folder called Music in my home-folder, so this makes the path to it "/home/mediabox/Music". Note: Linux is case sensitive, so if the folder has a capital letter in it, you need to write it the same way. I hope this helps, if not let me know where it goes wrong. -- PeterDB ------------------------------------------------------------------------ PeterDB's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11341 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35035 _______________________________________________ unix mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/unix
