Thanks for your quick replies. My slimserv user does not have a login shell, but I did try starting slimserver as a different non-root user after changing the ownership of the files under /var/db/slimserver to that user. It seemed to work fine.
I'm beginning to think that the problem is that the Perl Taint mode is being enabled. >From "Programming Perl": "Perl automatically enables taint mode whenever it detects its progam running with differing real and effective user or group IDs" I have not yet found anything that claims that Taint mode will cause the file tests to fail, but it is starting to seem likely to me. If this is the case, I am not sure where this puts me with respect to starting slimserver upon boot. Thanks again for yor help.
