Sorry to come back so late... more urgent things left my PC silent. About startup scripts in Ubuntu (or Debian based linuses): /etc contains folder rcS.d, rc0.d up to rc6.d. Each folder contains symbolic links to scripts in /etc/init.d. At boot time, init process runs scripts in those folders, according to the run level (so when starting run level 2, will run scripts linked from /etc/rc2.d). Scripts are executed in the their alphabetical order, based on a naming convention. Links are named Sxxthe_scriptm such as S20slimserver. To make it start later, I have renamed it S99slimserver.
Still, it does not start with the right locale (starts in iso-8859-1, while I want it in utf8). I am going to try SteveEast proposal and will let you know.
