First of all, on any linux system it is a mistake to log in as root
other than for the short period required to do whatever only root can
do. Your music, Slimserver and any other programs should really be
installed and run as just an ordinary user. 

To tell Slimserver which directory to use for music, open your web
browser and type in http://servername:9000 where "servername" is the
name of the machine. (You can also use the machine's IP address.) If
you are doing this from the linux machine itself, you can use
"localhost" as the servername. The Slimserver web page should appear.
This is your control panel for Slimserver. 

Go to "server settings" and down that page you'll see "music
directory." Put in the path to the directory where your music is
stored. You'll want to do a scan of the directory at this point so
Slimserver can make an inventory of your music.

If your Windows machine has a shared directory, you'd put the path to
that in the music directory spot. 

I'm not at home right now so this is from memory but I think it's
pretty close.
