There's a second setting in SlimServer you should check. For the software player, Player Settings - Audio - Bitrate Limiting (bottom of page). This will indicate whether SlimServer recognizes LAME on your system. IIRC Ubuntu 7.04 does come with LAME - search for it in Synaptic, mine is 3.96.1-2ubuntu1. Synaptic indicates it comes from multiverse. You can also just type "lame" at a command prompt, if installed it will reply with the version number and usage commands.
