I have had real problems understanding the WOL function with my ASUS
P5B-VM motherboard. I enabled it in bios, but it wouldn't work. I tried
a PCI intel card and that worked. I tried a PCI-E device and no joy.

Today I discovered Webmin and ethertool. With various intel controllers
the following turns on the WOL function for squeezebox 3s using the
magic packet signal.

"sudo ethtool -s eth0 wol g"

sudo is the temporary root command for kubuntu and other similar
distros.
-s allows you to change a parameter.

eth0 is the device name

wol is the command

g is the instruction to allow magic packet signals.

Please be careful as i would imagine you can do quite lot of damage to
the LAN card. If you need further info try "ethertool manual" search on
the good old google.

Mike.
