I didn't get the red flash warning, but I could browse to the music folder (though the files were not added to the library). However, you were right about this being a permissions issue. I'd drag the music across from a network drive, and forgot to check the permissions... I've just done a chmod -R 755, and the scan then worked fine. (So no need to mess about with slimserver's groups.) Doh! Sorry for bothering you (though I guess you're interested to hear that I didn't get a warning about inaccessible files?)
