Hi BPA, thanks for your suggestions.  After rebooting the server things
appear a bit more clear.  Non-AlienBBC internet radio streams work
fine, and like you said all Alien streams appear dead.  I'll try
upgrading mplayer and see what happens.

Also as you said the bitrate restricting on the server side causes far
more trouble than it solves.  Most internet radio streams are <=128Kbps
anyway and restricting them further results in loud white noise.  If I
play local FLAC encoded media, also server restricted, then XMMS shows
the bitrate jumping from 96 to >160 and the playback is awful - in
short it looks like the limit doesn't really work at all.

Do you happen to have a custom-convert.conf line for RTSP-MP3
conversion already?  I'm a novice to the conversion utils and it would
save me a lot of man page thumbing.  I dare say I'll figure it out but
clues are useful!  I will also try to limit the bit rate here and see
what happens - somehow direct hacking command line tools always appears
more robust than pointy clicky interfaces.
