You can DL a "live" CD of just about any flavor of linux that interests you. You boot the computer from the live CD and it will run as if it were running from your HDD (though a LOT slower). You can see if the distro you are testing recognizes and configures your hardware correctly without actually installing linux. I used Ubuntu (Gnome desktop) and now run Kubuntu (KDE destop). I like Kubuntu better and it seems to be easier to do things with KDE. I am no linux expert, but I have been able to find out how to do everything I need via a couple web searches. Both Ubuntu and Kubuntu worked with my hardware without any screwing around.
