After doing a "Clear library and scan everything", the situation is
back, more or less, to normal (album sorting is screwy). There are no
additional messages in the scan log.

artists
Perhaps a glutton for punishment, I prepared a dozen albums while the
clear and full scan was in progress and added them to my music
directory after it was completed. This time when I attempted a "Look
for new and changed music", the system said that it was scanning but
appeared to do nothing. The additional albums do not show up, and
there are no messages in the scan log file. I browsed to one of the
new albums via "Music Folder" and found that it was there and
playable. Once I played it, it became available to the database.
(Actually, this not found new music becomes available as soon as I
browse to it.)
After vising a couple of the new albums and seeing them added to the
database, I tried repeating the "Look for new and changed music" scan.
This time, the scan appeared to progress more normally. However after
it finished, and I went to the squeezecenter home, I saw no library
statistics displayed. When I tried to browse to albums, I found the
server unresponsive.
This time I checked the scan log to find it flooded with errors:
