I don't think mplayer is available from the CC repository, although an
rpm version for Fedora core may work. But you could download the source
code and compile, it's what I did (a long time ago). I don't recall
that I had any issues.
To compile the source you will need the cc-devel package from CC.

apt-get update
apt-get clean
apt-get install cc-devel

then

go to http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html to get the latest
source

Download to a temp directory of your choice and unpack, a directory
named mplayer will be created.

cd to the mplayer directory.

Type the following

./configure

make
make install

NOTE: 'make' and 'make install' may take some time. The mplayer binary
created should be located in /usr/local/bin.

That should do it.

Use Alien to test mplayer or in a terminal window type:

Code:
--------------------
mplayer -bandwidth 10000000 -cache 128 -playlist
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/realplayer/media/fmg2.rpm
--------------------

To stream mp3, you will also need lame, but you may have that already?

Good luck
