Isn't one of the advantages of sudo that it is temporary - it logs you 
back out of root privileges automatically after a period of inactivity 
(after 15 minutes by default in Debian;  after 5 minutes in Ubuntu)? 
Some see this as a useful fail-safe.  (And you can change the default 
timeouts if you wish).
