Returning to the OP's original question - 

Use:

sudo service squeezecenter restart from a terminal window.  Similarly
squeezecenter can be stopped or started by using stop or start at the
end of the command.

To make things easier, a shortcut to these commands could easily be
placed on the desktop or Gnome panels.
