The command line in custom-convert.conf tells mplayer to use a largish
buffer the BBC streams. The time take to fill this buffer depends on
the stream speeds and whether it is live or not. A large buffer means
reduced stuttering in case of network problems. 

This buffer takes about 2-3 secs to fill for "Listen Again" and longer
for live streams (can be 10-15 secs)especially the slow streams such as
World Service.

I'm not sure what the pause after start playing but I think it is
related to buffers in SC and buffers in mplayer.
