Tried setting several of the debug options in the prefs. Did not find anything interesting relative to the hanging, but did find that with Java Sound (verbose) and combinations of one or more other options, the player works correctly virtually all of the time! That is, by turning on some debugging, I am able to skip and select tracks without the player hanging (except very occasionally).
