Check the 'playlistdir' value in /var/lib/squeezecenter_trunk/prefs/server.prefs. Then check the permissions on that folder: make sure that the squeezecenter user has rights to it.
What sort of playlists? If your playlists are solely internet radio related ones, this might explain it: For a short time, /usr/share/squeezecenter/SQL/mysql/schema_optimize.sql was deleting any tracks that were flagged as 'remote' i.e. internet radio urls. That 'feature' was reverted some time ago, but, if you're running an older version of 7.1, you might have a version that deletes these tracks in the DB. The "My Radio Stations" plugin, which is a new 7.1 feature, will have us all migrating our remote stream .m3u and .pls playlists to the myradio.opml file.
