Well, that explains part of it:

Code:
--------------------

  # file ./lame.old
./lame.old: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV),
dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.9, stripped
  # file ./lame
./lame: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically
linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.9, not stripped

--------------------

Sorry to ask such a noob question, but, what is stripping, and how does
one do it? (faint sound of cymbal crash and snare drum going "bah-dump
bump" in background.)

For instance:

Code:
--------------------

  # strip -s --strip-all --discard-all lame.new -o lame.new.strip
  # ls lame* -l
  -rwxr-xr-x 1 squeezecenter squeezecenter 349146 2008-07-07 14:52 lame
  -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 349146 2008-07-08 15:22 lame.new
  -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 322232 2008-07-08 15:30
lame.new.strip
  -rwxr-xr-x 1 squeezecenter squeezecenter 71268 2007-04-07 16:46 lame.old

--------------------

..doesn't seem to have much of an effect on the filesize.

PS: livna is one of the main rpm repos for Fedora:
