Stripping removes information which may be present in the binary, but
which is not necessary for executing the file. For example debugging
information which enables debuggers to map points in the execution of a
process with points in the source code. There can also be other types of
extra information.

Another source of difference in file size may be due to which which
compiler options where used. But the difference seems quite
significant, so I doubt that is the whole explanation, but it's hard to
say.

On my Ubuntu machine lame is 455772.
