Got it.  Yeah, compile sources for MySQL5 was the way to go. 
Everything worked but the scanner.pl threw a crazy error with the GD
perl module.  It said it needed version 2.35 but told me I had 2.35
installed.  I checked and my CPAN version was actually 2.39. So got the
2.35 source and installed it.  Then everything started to work.

Actually, a disclaimer to compile everything and use exactly the right
version of the perl modules would be useful.  I really like slimserver,
but, man huge pain sometimes.
