Hi All,

I've been having problems with my old setup using an ancient P3 750
Windows 2000 machine and so I decided to finally take the plunge and
upgrade my server hardware. I went for cheap, cheap, cheap and ended up
with an Asus MicroATX AMD motherboard and an Althlon 64 dual core cpu
for not very much really. (At least when I remember how much it _used_
to cost to build a PC!) I also decided that now's the time to move to
Linux so I went with Suse 11 (using KDE3.5). I did try out Debian,
Kubuntu and Ubuntu first but all had minor niggles that for someone
with Linux experience could've sorted quickly but for me just starting
out with it they were just too much hassle. (hardware detection issues,
Samba setup, VNC setup, etc)

So anyway to cut a long boring story short, a friend recommended Suse11
(DVD install version) and selection of KDE3.5 rather than KDE4. This all
worked a treat. SC7.2 (rpm)installed without problem once I'd installed
mysql and everything works great. MUCH faster response than the old
Windows box. I'm well pleased.

AND...I may just be imagining things here...but I'm convinced the sound
quality is better too. I have NO idea why this would be as I didn't
update the SB3 firmware. (I changed the firmware config file to use
version 81 and copied in the v81 firmware.) So it can't be related to
firmware changes in the player...I just don't know why it should sound
different...

Anyway, for anyone wanting a stable and relatively painless SC7.2
platform then I can vouch for the Suse11 KDE3.5, AMD Athlon 64. I put
in 1Gb RAM but some is shared with my graphics adapter so I find it's
using just about all the main memory so I may well add another 1Gb.
It's cheap!

Cheers,
Tony
