The problem has been fixed.

Since I had to wipe the cache to get 7.0-1 working again, I decided to
try the same maneuver with 7.2-1. After stopping the service and
uninstalling 7.0-1, I wiped the cache before installing 7.2-1. This
allowed the new service to start with no error messages and gave access
to the web page on port 9000.

However, it wouldn't scan the database. I had to wipe the cache two
more times (using the command line "rm -rf" in the appropriate
directory and making sure Squeezecenter was stopped) and it finally
scanned the music folder, giving the same song count as I had before
the upgrade. Not sure why this was necessary as the cache showed
completely empty after the earlier wipes.

It all seems to be a bit more of a hassle than it should be for a
routine upgrade, but hopefully this thread will be helpful to someone
else in a similar predicament.
