Looks like your LS isn't running MySQL, or it's not configured correctly. What version of slimserver are you installing, 6.5.x? The instructions on Marc Field's web site appear to still apply to pre-6.5 slimserver, which used SQLite instead of MySQL.
If you're trying to install 6.5.x, you'll need to install MySQL. With luck it won't need any special configuration.
