Did a fresh 8.04 install Wednesday and all went fine. When you install via the repository 'sudo apt-get install squeezecenter' should suffice, it should be started automatically as a service. Just to be sure you could reboot your box to get around apparmor issues that could show up (but this shouldn't be necessary anymore AFAIK). Besides, you always start services as root, therefore sudo is right.
