Well, I did slap that T3 line in a new /etc/inittab file (with appropriate permissions) and rebooted, but it didn't take. I probably have to have more in my inittab file but I'm not knowledgeable to create it correctly.
I did find a good link discussing Ubuntu's upstart - the replacement for inittab. There are good examples for getty in there, so I should be able to make something work for mgetty.
