Ghan noticed my signature indicating the segfault problem I was having and indicated that he saw the same issue on Debian 4. He found that the problem was solved by putting a copy of mmm.ini in the .MusicMagic directory. I did that and (to quote Emeril) BAM!, it worked! :-).
I had tried copying over other files but for some reason didn't think to copy the .ini file over. Silly me. What a silly failure mode when a configuration file is not present - quite annoying.
