I'm running a somewhat similar setup, only a pre-atom board. Here's my
basic setup:

'Intel D201GLY2'
1 GB Kingston Value ram
2 * 1TB WDC GP "Green" HDDs

I added a gigabit network card in the only PCI slot it has, mostly
because I use the server as a backup destination as well. Picture of
the finished system can be found 'here'
(http://members.home.nl/cytro/DSC01150%20(2).JPG). I know the case and
fans are overkill, but the fans spin at very low RPM and are barely
audible.

I went with Ubuntu Server as operating system and have not regretted
it. It did take me a little while to get used to it, but there is so
much information online these days you can figure out almost anything
by doing some googling. Initial setup may be a little challenging, but
once it is up and running you really do not need anything other than a
few commands to keep it up to date.

The server runs headless, whenever I need to do something on it, I just
use an SSH session and do what I need to get done. I also run Samba with
some file shares enabling me to access the files on the server from
Windows based systems. I mostly rip my music on a workstation and then
move it to the server when its done and tagged.

It's run stable ever since I installed it, never had any issues with it
hardware wise and I'm very happy with the performance.

As I said, the mainboard I have is pre-atom, but the CPU performance is
similar to an atom cpu. The only recommendation I would like to give you
is to pick the D945GCLF2 over the D945GCLF. The "2" has an onboard
gigabit network card, which can come in handy. Of course you can add
one later in the PCI slot if your case is big enough, but with the "2"
board you keep your only PCI slot free for other uses. You also get a
dual core atom, which should keep the system more responsive if you do
manage to put a heavy load on it.

I actually can't really remember what I installed thus far, but in
relation to SqueezeCenter and music I can think of the following:

- SSH server (can be selected when installing the server edition)
- Samba (can be selected when installing the server edition)
- LAMP (can be selected when installing the server edition)
- mp3gain
- WeatherDateTime (SqueezeCenter Plugin)

I use the server as a development server too, so I needed Apache, MySQL
and PHP.

I don't use any USB devices, I boot from one of the hard disks.

Hope this helps you some :)
