Thanks for the advice guys. I've actually started the build with the above-mentioned setup and have put it in the tiniest ITX box I could find. It took me a while to fiddle around with the BIOS to get it to boot via USB but I eventually got it to work. In the end, I decided to just install Ubuntu 8.10 to the HD.
I've installed SC and am currently downloading some updates.
