Running

PERL-AFTER-UPGRADE -F

didn't solve the issue here. I'm using portupgrade, not portmaster, and
no idea what is comparable to -portmaster --check-depends- (perhaps
pkgdb?).

I came across the -rebuild-xs- target in
/usr/ports/lang/perl5.8/Makefile - calling that seems to have solved
the issue for me. From http://www.freshports.org/lang/perl5.8/:
