Thanks for your suggestions. I have now tried them all but still no luck. The RPM seems to do its stuff, and the squeezecenter service apparent starts (a status check shows it is running) but after a minute or two it stops.
Evidently the SqueezeCenter is implemented on the Ripserver in some kind of non-standard way, or at least in a way that I cannot figure out. So I guess I will give up on this until I can find someone who knows the Ripserver better. Fortunately I have a boot disk that re-installs the whole system with 7.1.1, so at least I can get that working again. And I did learn a lot about Linux that I didn't know before.
