Two things. First, the hard disk boot failure could just be a corrupted
boot sector, which you can overwrite successfully with the Linux
install. Or it could be a sign of mechanical failure of the hard disk,
in which case you'd be out of luck. Second, you need to make sure that
the computer's BIOS is set to boot from the CD drive. You could just
pop the Linux CD in there and see, or you might need to interrupt the
computer on startup and change the BIOS settings.

If you can get it to boot from the CD, I recommend using one of the
Linux "live CDs" that allows you to try out the Linux distribution
before installing it on your computer. That should help you assess
whether or not the hard drive problem is mechanical failure *before*
you try to install Linux on it. Good luck.
