I have been up and running with my current system now for about two
years. Going with the philosophy of if "it ain't broke don't fix it",
I've pretty much left it alone which means I am now well out of date.
I am running SlimServer 6.5.2 on Ubuntu 6.10. The latter is a server
install and my hardware is a Mini-ITX box based around a Via EPIA
MII-6000 motherboard with a 600MHz processor and 0.5 GB RAM. It runs
headless.

I'd like to replace the hard drive with a bigger one (and the case fan
with a quieter one) so I'm thinking now is as good a time as any to
upgrade the software. By 'upgrade' I'm really meaning a clean
installation on the new drive. I'd like to ask some advice here about
the best route to take:

1. Shall I stick with Ubuntu? I've been quite happy with it and I like
the fact that it is so widely used so information is easy to come by.
Are there any good reasons to try something else, given the context of
mainly being a SqueezeBox server and backup file server? I realise this
will be largely a matter of opinion but that's OK - I'm interested to
hear.

2. Are there any current problems with AlienBBC? I seem to recall this
was the trickiest bit to get going. (Not that I use it a huge amount and
I'm not sure my current install is still working completely properly but
I like the idea of it being there.)

3. When I asked for advice on here 2 years ago, I was recommended that
if I were to use Ubuntu I should use the 'alternate' version that was
compiled for 386. (My processor does not support some 686 instructions
apparently.) Does this advice still stand? The reason I ask is that
having looked into this again, I can't find any definitive statement
that the alternate install is compiled any differently from the others.
Nevertheless would this still be the version to use?

4. A related question - is it worth considering installing something
(Ubuntu or otherwise) that provides a GUI? It would have to be
something pretty lightweight given my hardware and limited on-board
graphics. I get on OK with command line, but sometimes I wonder if
life would be easier with a bit of a GUI.

Sorry about the rather vague questions. Just hoping to get some ideas
to look into before taking the plunge.

Thanks

Zoltan
