Actually, "apt-get update" only updates the repository list that apt-get
searches. You only need to do "apt-get update" if you have edited
/etc/apt/sources.list.

Assuming that the necessary repository line(s) already exist in
/etc/apt/sources.list, I generally upgrade SC by invoking:

apt-get install squeezecenter

You need to run this as superuser, or prefixing the command with sudo.
