Using padsp was the only way I could get squeezeslave to work reliably at the time. I've been using this version for a long time, I don't remember if it was the alsa or oss version. It looks like there is only an alsa version available of 8-25 for the 2.6 kernel. I downloaded it, but the binary doesn't match what I'm using.
