Replying to myself here. Just after my last post, I found the cause and remedy for the appender error in 'another thread' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=245155#post245155)!
Simply removing the empty file prefs/log.conf made the error go away. I'm quite confused by this, however, since my original instructions involved creating this file in order to get the ownership right.
