I actually still have a Windows XP MCE partition that Grub can let me
boot into on this machine. So I can (but rarely do) log into that OS
using the same SSD drive. The difference in performance is still hugely
in favour of Ubuntu, partly due to the fact that the Windows partition
had been well-used by my wife and had become very slow with the typical
Windows "ageing" process (or "bit rot," as it is ironically termed).

As to use of SSD drives, I treated it just like a rotating HDD and
didn't do anything special. I believe write-times tend to slow down over
the life of a SDD due to the fact that the drive cannot distinguish a
deleted file from one that is still indexed. This eventually causes the
controller to have to do a lot of shuffling around of blocks in order to
write some new files to the drive. The cure for this is support of the
TRIM command (both in the OS and the SSD). It's not there in Linux
quite yet, but it is in Windows 7. However, that issue really doesn't
impact SSD read speeds which is mainly what gives the very fast bootup
and application launch times.
