Since Gharris999 seems to expect the server to be offline most of the time, my opinion is that there is no need to have the whole library inline, hence the need for Raid. I never had any removable drive break when it was on the shelf, nor ever had a drive die before showing some read or write errors.
I have in mind an application like him, in fact. After looking here and there I am still undecided between going with Bacula and a "virtual tape" configuration, or simply with rsync/cp along with a large catalog (text) file that I can keep inline and grep to lookup a file/volume. I'll be using a sturdy usb disk cradle to make the volumes available to the system (not fast but practical if the backup platform needs replacing sometime) and a permanent felt tip pen to label the drives. The backup machine will be next to the main server, but archive volumes will be kept elsewhere. -- epoch1970 Daily dose delivered by: 2 SB Classic (fw 130), 1 SB Boom (fw 50) SqueezeCenter 7.3.4 (Debian 5.0) with plugins: ContextMenu, SaverSwitcher by Peter Watkins Server Power Control by Gordon Harris WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) FindArt, CDplayer by bpa BBC iPlayer, SwitchPlayer by Triode PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple TrackStat by Erland Isaksson. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84125
