Really, if you are up to installing the latest (10.10 Maverick) ubuntu, and you run a pc that has firmware support on the standard distribution (test via running "live" version), then installing just operating system + squeezeboxserver is easier and faster on ubuntu.
1. Do a standard ubuntu install. I've done this for a Pentium 4 Dell desktop, and a small Xeon server. Probably 20 min, vs quite a bit longer for other systems starting with Wi* 2. Go to mysqueezebox.com, download latest server s/w. When done, you'll find the server running on localhost:9000. It will do so every time you boot. That's it. I kid you not. The caveat is that your PC video and networking cards are supported on ubuntu. For desktops the chances are high. For very recent hardware, check the forums for support status. Good luck! PS: lightweight vs full-featured linus distro. I've tried several distros, and in the end the memory and cpu used by most distros is similar. Eg. between standard ubuntu and peppermint one, the cpu load difference was <0.5% on idle. With a 44.1kHz brutefir room correction running with sbserver to a an sbtouch, idle was ~96%. The efficiency of brutefir is a major factor for going linux if you're looking for room correction on sqeezebox. -- mervin_b ------------------------------------------------------------------------ mervin_b's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=42376 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=59982 _______________________________________________ unix mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
