And that's exactly why Robin recommended to build LVM on top of a MD
device, which will be able to recover from failures.

You're missing the most interesting point, IMO, which may not be
critical to Greg since he wants to use his system as a backup server,
and will probably accept downtime: live maintenance.

Yes, LVM can be dangerous when misused, but I can also assure you it's
saved my day more than once, already.
