Sorry to hear about your problem, but do you mean you didn't have a
backup? This time it was user error, but it could just have easily been
hardware failure, as hard drives eventually fail. 

If you don't have a backup, there are data recovery services that can
take a crack at restoring as much of your hard drive as possible. I
don't know of any in particular to recommend, and they tend to be
expensive, often in the $2000-3000 range. 

For any experts here, it may help if you told how you had the drive
formatted before (FAT32, NTFS, ext3, etc).
