Hi, I am no Linux expert, but have found plug/plughw to be helpful in getting soundcards/devices to play in Linux.
If you are willing to experiment, in asound.conf try changing type hw to type plug. plughw is an alsa plugin that automagically converts the sound stream to the correct format.
