I don't think it makes much difference. I see people use LVM to setup their machines, I think it is a pain and not worth it. I haven't reniced SBS, I did renice perl programs. My experience is: nothing happens with renice. You can get to some result via chrt and promote the program to "real time" class. I haven't compiled a linux kernel in a few years, but in the 2.6 years, chasing for kernel options like kernel ticks or preemption had a big impact. In present tickless days, I wouldn't know how to tune a VM kernel.
