That's a small / and a big swap. Have you noticed the gigantic 1.2GB
artwork.db file on my machine ?? (I get my covers from discogs or
better)

If you're short on SSD space that can help. The compressed image
expands, but never shrinks. You pay a little penalty when it has to
expand. I don't think it makes much difference. I see people use LVM to
setup their machines, I think it is a pain and not worth it. Out of
curiosity one of these days I'll use zvols but I have little
expectations.

I haven't reniced SBS, I did renice perl programs. My experience is:
nothing happens with renice. You can get to some result via chrt and
promote the program to "real time" class.
I haven't compiled a linux kernel in a few years, but in the 2.6 years,
chasing for kernel options like kernel ticks or preemption had a big
impact. In present tickless days, I wouldn't know how to tune a VM
kernel.
